Lisa faced death threats after using racial slur as trainee, says 'I grew up in Thailand and didn't know'

BLACKPINK member Lisa has apologized for performing a rap that included racially derogatory expressions during her trainee period.

In an interview with U.S. entertainment outlet Variety on the 14th (local time), Lisa spoke about her documentary film "Always Lisa" and past controversies that had surfaced.

Earlier, a video emerged showing Lisa performing a rap with racially derogatory language during her trainee days, sparking controversy. The documentary also revealed that after the video leak, Lisa received death threats and attempted to issue an official statement, but her former agency, YG Entertainment, opposed it. YG Entertainment's specific reasons for opposing the statement release remain unknown.

Regarding her actions at the time, Lisa said, "I sincerely apologize." She added, "To be honest, I am Thai and grew up in Thailand. Because I did not receive proper education on this matter, I was unaware back then."

She continued, "However, now that I have learned and understood, I will never do such things again," and reiterated, "It was truly a wrong action, and I deeply apologize."

Lisa also addressed the leak of the video, which occurred last year just before her first solo performance at Coachella. She stated, "I wanted to focus on the performance, but something unavoidable happened, and I felt sad. It was beyond my control," yet she added, "But I overcame it."

"Always Lisa" is a documentary film that chronicles Lisa's childhood dreams, her journey to becoming a global star as a member of BLACKPINK, and her current activities. The film will be released in the United States on October 12.

Lisa debuted with BLACKPINK in 2016 and gained popularity through songs such as "Kill This Love" and "Shut Down." She has since established her own company, LLLOUD, and is currently active as both a solo singer and actress.
