Singer Kim Yeon-ja (67) recalled an incident in which she failed to receive settlement for earnings worth over 100 billion won during her past activities in Japan, and revealed that she now manages her assets herself.
The episode of JTBC's "Knowing Bros" aired on the 17th was themed as a "Kim Shin-young Family Special," featuring appearances by Lee Gye-in, Kim Yeon-ja, and Hyun-sook.
On the show, Kim Shin-young said, "Actually, Yeon-ja debuted at a young age. She has an image of being sharp and capable now, but she can't do anything without a manager."
In response, Kim Yeon-ja confessed, "I really can't do anything. I had a manager continuously from when I went to Japan at the age of 18." She added, "I went to Japan at an age when I should have been learning about society, but since my managers did everything for me, I didn't know anything. I still don't know now."
When Kim Young-chul asked, "Can't you even handle bank business?" Kim Yeon-ja replied, "I go to the bank in person. But I don't know how to use internet banking." She continued, "I couldn't even hail a taxi or open my apartment door; it was like that."
Hearing this, Seo Jang-hoon advised, "Yeon-ja made a good decision. Didn't you say you go to the bank in person? You should do at least that yourself."
Kim Yeon-ja emphasized, "Jang-hoon hyung, I manage everything myself now," and Seo Jang-hoon repeatedly urged, "Yes, you have to do it yourself."
Kim Yeon-ja entered the Japanese market at age 18 and was active there for a long period. She later married her ex-husband, who was a Korean resident in Japan (zainichi korean) and So Sok-sa (CEO), 18 years her senior, and entrusted him entirely with financial management.
However, she revealed that when she divorced after 30 years of marriage in 2012, she did not receive settlement for the earnings worth over 100 billion won, which are known to have been earned over more than 20 years.
Kim Yeon-ja also disclosed this story recently on tvN's "You Quiz on the Block." She stated that although she was active overseas, including in Japan, and generated substantial earnings, she had to return to Korea without receiving any property after the divorce.
Kim Yeon-ja revealed that because she devoted herself solely to singing, she could not properly check her income and assets, and subsequently began managing her money directly.
