Actor Gong Hyung-jin (57), who sparked controversy with his rude remarks toward junior actress Cha Ji-yeon (44), expressed his apology through his agency.
Gong's agency, K Heart Entertainment, stated on the 19th, "He spoke to Cha Ji-yeon, a junior he is close to, with the intention of telling her not to be nervous and to enjoy the moment comfortably together. There was no intent to make the other person feel uncomfortable or displeased."
The agency added, "However, we regret that misunderstandings and controversy arose because the conversation and expressions exchanged on site were conveyed differently from their original intent. We have also expressed our apology to Cha Ji-yeon's side, and we apologize to everyone who felt displeased."
The agency further stated, "Gong Hyung-jin feels a sense of deep regret that the meaningful event marking KRF's 70th anniversary has drawn attention due to this controversy rather than its original purpose. We convey our gratitude and regrets to all, including the event organizers."
It emphasized, "We hope that this incident will be resolved amicably through mutual understanding and consideration, rather than being over-interpreted without fully considering the intentions of those involved and the context of the scene. We will strive to be more cautious in our public words and actions going forward."
Previously, Gong Hyung-jin took the stage alongside Cha Ji-yeon as an interim host for a special performance at the "70th Anniversary Homecoming Day of KRF," held on the 17th at Hanyang University in Seongdong-gu, Seoul.
At the time, Gong Hyung-jin sparked controversy with his rude behavior, including demanding that Cha Ji-yeon, who was bowing at a 90-degree angle, "greet again because you are a senior," and telling her, "I'm about to hit you soon," when she clenched her fist and shouted "Amen."
