Singer Heo Gak (42) revealed that he had many pessimistic thoughts due to thyroid cancer.
Heo met with Jang Jae-in for a meal in the video "I sang with my big brother Heo Gak from Superstar K after a long time," released on the YouTube channel 'Singer-Songwriter Jae-in' on the 23rd of last month.
Jang Jae-in opened by saying, "I found out that you were sick." Heo Gak recalled, "There were no signs or signals at all" and "Since I was working, I just thought I must have been tired."
He continued, "I went to the hospital for a health checkup with my father, but since the waiting time was long, I received a basic examination and cancer was discovered" and "They did an ultrasound exam and found something in my neck. It was incredibly small. They said I needed to have a biopsy. It was cancer."

Heo Gak stated that at the time in 2017, he had released his new song "Fool" and was preparing for a concert. He said, "I asked if I could delay the surgery any longer, but they said it was dangerous. I finished the concert and then immediately underwent surgery."
Afterward, unexpected difficulties arose. Heo Gak explained that he took about a year off from activities, stating, "My voice changed a lot. Before, I sometimes made a raspy sound when hitting high notes, but after the surgery, it was completely gone. For 3 to 4 months after the surgery, I couldn't even speak well."
Returning to the stage was not easy either. Heo Gak revealed, "After about a year passed, I thought maybe I could sing again, so I went to an event, but I kept going off-key. I couldn't control my voice" and "I just thought, 'I'm already dead now. My life is over.'"
He continued, "It was really hard, but my family helped me by constantly preventing me from having negative thoughts," and revealed that it took nearly two years for his voice to return to its current state.
