HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said Thursday that it has completed construction and held a naming ceremony for the world's largest ammonia-powered vessel with a capacity of 93,000 cubic meters.
The event, held at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan Shipyard, was attended by approximately 110 attendees, including Lee Sang-gyun, Vice Chairman and General Manager of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries; Cyril Ducau, CEO of EPS; Loh Khum Yean, Chairman of the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA); Tan Beng Tee, Secretary-General of the Singapore Maritime Foundation; and John Mcdonald, Chairman of ABS.
This vessel is the first ship in a series of two ordered by Singapore's EPS from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2023. It was named 'Terra Clove,' combining 'Terra,' meaning Earth in Latin, and 'Clove,' meaning flower bud.
The vessel is equipped with an ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system, designed to allow the selective use of conventional marine fuel and the eco-friendly fuel ammonia. Following final finishing work, it is scheduled for delivery in early next month.
Measuring 230 meters in length, 36.5 meters in width, and 23.6 meters in height, the vessel carries four cargo holds designed and manufactured by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries using its proprietary technology. It also features shaft generators that produce electricity by utilizing the rotation of the propulsion engine's shaft, as well as nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide reduction devices, enhancing its environmental friendliness.
In particular, safety has been strengthened by applying disaster prevention technologies and systems, including a device for real-time detection of ammonia leaks and an ammonia emission reduction system.
At the naming ceremony, Vice Chairman Lee Sang-gyun stated, "I am honored to have worked with EPS over the past 30-plus years to build next-generation eco-friendly vessels," adding, "The construction of this world's largest ammonia-powered vessel is a significant step forward toward decarbonization in shipping."
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan Shipyard, located in Mipo Bay, Ulsan, is the oldest shipyard in the HD Hyundai Group.
