Samsung and SK held consecutive meetings with Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and known as the 'father of ChatGPT,' who is currently visiting South Korea. The meetings are expected to serve as an opportunity to strengthen their 'AI (artificial intelligence) project alliance.'
According to business sources on the 31st, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won had lunch with CEO Altman at a location in Seoul. It is reported that executives from major SK Group affiliates, including SK hynix, also attended the lunch.
Chairman Chey has consistently maintained his relationship with CEO Altman. The chairman met with CEO Altman at the SK Sulin Building when the OpenAI chief visited South Korea in October last year. They also met at the 'AI Summit' held in San Francisco, United States, in July of this year.
Following CEO Altman's visit to South Korea last October, SK Group agreed to participate as a key partner in the 'Stargate Project,' an AI data center construction initiative being pursued by OpenAI. The two sides reached consensus on matters such as establishing a production system capable of responding promptly to requests for up to 900,000 HBM (high-bandwidth memory) wafers per month based on DRAM wafer standards (SK hynix), and promoting a 'Korean-style Stargate' in the southwestern region of South Korea (SK Telecom).
It appears that cooperation plans along the lines of these projects were also discussed at the lunch meeting. It is believed that opinions were exchanged regarding AI semiconductor technology and telecommunications-specific applications.

On this day, Samsung announced that it held an 'Invitation Briefing Session with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman' for the presidents of major affiliates, including Samsung Electronics, at the Samsung Human Resources Development Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. Approximately 50 presidents from Samsung affiliates in the electronics, finance, and bio sectors attended the session.
The briefing session was conducted under the theme 'The Next 10 Years Changed by AI: Corporate Choices.' Samsung executives and CEO Altman reviewed the development direction and application possibilities of AI technology, and exchanged views on new markets and business opportunities that will emerge from AI advancement. In particular, they examined the impact AI will have on corporate decision-making and organizational operations, and discussed the competencies that management must possess in the new business environment.
Samsung and OpenAI have continued their cooperative relationship in the field of AI infrastructure. Samsung Electronics and OpenAI signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for cooperation on global AI infrastructure construction last October, and have been promoting the supply of memory semiconductors required for OpenAI's 'Stargate' project.
At that time, Samsung SDS agreed to cooperate in the fields of AI data center construction and enterprise AI services, while Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries agreed to jointly develop offshore floating data centers. In July of this year, Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong visited OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco, United States, among other exchanges between the two companies.
