LG Uplus is launching efforts to secure a standard model for prefabricated modular data centers (PMDC). The strategy aims to shorten the construction period for AI data centers (AI DC) and establish a collaborative framework to standardize quality in response to surging demand for AI infrastructure.
On the 6th, LG Uplus announced that it signed a 'Business Agreement on Establishing the PMDC Alliance' with GS E&C, Zai C&A, Gansam Architecture, D&O CM, and others at Pyeongchon Mega Center in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, on the 4th. Executives from each company, including Hong Bum-sik of LG Uplus Hong Beom-sik (CEO), Heo Yun-hong of GS E&C, and Kim Wook-soo of Zai C&A, attended the signing ceremony.
PMDC is a data center construction model that standardizes building structures, power systems, and cooling facilities, prefabricates them in factories, and assembles them on-site. This approach shortens construction time compared to traditional methods and enhances quality consistency. It has gained attention due to the rapid surge in data center demand driven by the spread of AI.
The companies participating in this PMDC alliance jointly developed a standard model for applying PMDC to actual AIDC projects since April, based on their respective expertise in design, construction, operation, and project management. Participants examined new construction models centered on 100-megawatt (MW) scale hyperscale PMDC models and retrofit models that convert existing buildings into data centers tailored for AI infrastructure.
The participating companies agreed to build a PMDC model at a global level. Specifically, LG Uplus will play roles in defining PMDC operation standards and technical requirements, establishing business direction, and validating the model, leveraging its experience in data center construction and operation. The company plans to utilize know-how accumulated over 27 years as the only entity in Korea maintaining uninterrupted 99.999% (5-Nine) operations.
GS E&C, a specialized construction firm focused on the building sector, will provide services including feasibility reviews for new PMDC models, process optimization, and EPC (Engineering·Procurement·Construction) capabilities. Zai C&A will be responsible for developing retrofit-type models applicable to existing buildings and optimizing power and cooling systems, based on its experience in MEP (Mechanical·Electrical·Plumbing) construction. Gansam Architecture will establish the PMDC standard design model, while D&O CM will provide project management and CM capabilities.
Hong Bum-sik of LG Uplus Yoo Peul-reo-seu (CEO) stated, "This PMDC alliance brings together specialized companies in AIDC design, construction, and operation to pool their capabilities with the goal of actual business application," adding, "We will create a PMDC model with global competitiveness and continuously strengthen our ability to compete in next-generation AIDC construction."
