Comedian Bae Young-man (67) shared how he went through marital discord after the sudden loss of his young daughter, leading to a divorce and him raising three children on his own.
On the third, Bae Young-man, who gained popularity with the catchphrase "That's right," appeared on MBN's 'Special World.'
During the broadcast, Bae Young-man opened up about his life living alone since divorcing 20 years ago. All three of his children are now independent; he said, "My daughter got married three years ago, and my youngest is in a company dormitory. My eldest son ran away after having an argument with me."
He particularly revealed that he had been in conflict with his eldest son for a long time. Bae Young-man stated, "He disliked me since elementary school. I wanted my children to succeed, so I only scolded and disciplined my eldest son. I placed too much expectation on him."
Bae Young-man reconciled with his eldest son after the drunk son called to apologize. However, he remains worried because his son, who is working part-time while pursuing a career as an actor, has not yet established himself. The refrigerator at his son's home was filled with spoiled food, and they were using disposable containers without proper dishes, adding to Bae Young-man's concerns.
Bae Young-man eventually scolded his son, who plans to marry his Japanese girlfriend the year after next. He said, "He has guts, but how can someone with no money even think about getting married? If you can't feed your wife and children after marriage, what's the point of getting married?"
Later, Bae Young-man said, "Since our family was broken, isn't the responsibility on me as a father? I should have protected the family until the end. Because I couldn't do that, I feel sorry for my children."
He disclosed that the turning point that led to the collapse of his family was the sudden death of his young daughter.
Bae Young-man recalled, "I received a phone call saying, 'Your wife has collapsed at a large hospital in Ilsan.' When I went to the hospital, they told me my wife had collapsed in the emergency room and that our baby had already died. My daughter, who had smiled brightly that morning, was gone."
He said, "From then on, the conflict became extremely severe. We struggled so much that we couldn't maintain a family life. After losing one child, our home fell apart completely."
He added, "Looking back now, I should have been more accepting, but I couldn't be. Since living together was difficult, we had no choice but to separate, and I took full responsibility for raising the children."
Bae Young-man debuted in 1983 through MBC's 'Gag Contest,' gaining popularity with the catchphrase "That's right." After being diagnosed with laryngeal cancer, he underwent surgery twice and is currently also active as a pastor.
