Actor Han Jung-soo voiced opposition to calls to suspend SBS drama "Doctor X: The Era of the White Mafia," which deals with the May 18 Democratization Movement.
On Sunday, Han shared a scene from "Doctor X" on social media and wrote, "Suspend the broadcast? Are you crazy?"
He continued, "I don't usually watch dramas much, but I've been really enjoying 'Doctor X' lately. Thank you," expressing his affection for the work.
Previously, in Episode 6 of "Doctor X," which aired on Oct. 24, the story of Oh Sang-beom (played by Ha Sung-kyung), who suffered a gunshot wound to the head during the the 18th Democratization Movement in 1980, was depicted.
In the drama, Oh is a character who has suffered from aftereffects for many years due to injuries sustained at the time. The pain of victims of the democratic movement was highlighted in the process of surgeon Kye Su-jung (played by Kim Ji-won) taking charge of his surgery.
After the broadcast, some viewers raised concerns about using a historical event as material for a medical drama.
On Oct. 24, a petition titled "Petition Regarding the Suspension of SBS's Drama Doctor X" was posted on the National Assembly's public consent petition board. The petitioner stated that it was difficult to accept why content related to the the 18th Democratization Movement was included in the drama, and demanded verification of the production process and the suspension of broadcasting.
The petition met the pre-publication threshold of 100 supporters and entered the stage of reviewing whether to make it public.
On the other hand, positive evaluations also emerged, noting that the work shed light on historical tragedy and the wounds of victims.
