Actress Jeon Do-yeon is being tipped as a potential nominee for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film "Possible Love."
The film industry is watching closely to see whether she could become the first Korean actress to receive a nomination in the category.
The Hollywood Reporter, an American entertainment publication, spotlighted Jeon's acting career and her prospects in the Oscar race in an article published on Oct. 25 local time titled "Jeon Do-yeon, Who Defined an Era of Korean Cinema, Enters Oscar Race With 'Possible Love.'"
The publication praised Jeon's performance in "Possible Love," the latest film by director Lee Chang-dong. In particular, it said, "It is hard to imagine anyone other than Jeon Do-yeon playing Mi-ok," adding, "She makes remarkably human and distinctive acting choices in every scene. Her performance is vibrant and full of curiosity."
Fellow actor Lee Byung-hun also evaluated Jeon as an actress occupying a unique position in the Korean film industry. Director Lee Chang-dong likewise stated that Jeon represents an era of Korea, noting that it was impressive how she continues to demonstrate new acting possibilities even after achieving numerous accomplishments.
Regarding the possibility of being nominated for an Oscar, Jeon said, “Winning an Academy Award has never been my goal. It is something I have never desired.”
Director Lee Chang-dong expressed confidence that Jeon’s performance could captivate audiences’ hearts beyond language barriers, while acknowledging that it remains difficult for actors in non-English-language films to be nominated for Academy Awards.
Overseas interest in “Possible Love” is also intense. The film currently holds a 100% expert rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 59 reviews) and received the Grand Jury Prize, known as the Silver Lion, at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.
Previously, Yoon Yeo-jeong became the first Korean actor to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for “Minari.” Attention is now on whether Jeon Do-yeon will write a new history by being nominated for Best Actress. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles, U.S., on March 14, 2027.
“Possible Love” depicts the story of two couples — a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary director and her husband — who meet to produce a documentary and confront their different lives and hidden desires. It will be released on Netflix on Nov. 6.
