The three third-generation owners of Hanwha Group are advancing in succession, signaling a stronger push toward third-generation management. They are expected to enhance competitiveness in core businesses such as defense, finance, and retail while accelerating efforts to secure future growth drivers.
Hanwha Group announced on the 30th that it will implement key executive promotions and appoint new CEOs for certain affiliates effective next month. The core of this personnel change is the promotion of Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan to Executive Vice Chairman, four years after his elevation to vice chairman in August 2022. The position of Hanwha Group Executive Vice Chairman had remained vacant for about two years since former Executive Vice Chairman Geum Chun-soo stepped down in May 2024. This move is seen as reflecting the group's determination to solidify its control tower centered on the eldest son. Second son Kim Dong-won, president of Hanwha Life Insurance, and third son Kim Dong-seon, executive vice president of Hanwha Vision, were also promoted to vice chairman and president, respectively.
Executive Vice Chairman Kim has led the defense, shipbuilding, aerospace, and energy businesses, driving growth in global markets and successfully executing strategic large-scale projects. Vice Chairman Kim laid the foundation for future growth by leading digital innovation and global expansion in the financial sector, while Kim (President) achieved results in advanced industries including entry into the semiconductor equipment market alongside expansions in retail, leisure, and food and beverage businesses. A Hanwha Group official explained, "All three owners were recognized for their achievements at their respective positions, which led to this promotion."
Notably, this personnel change was carried out about a month earlier than originally scheduled for the regular promotion cycle, interpreted as a strategic move to ensure early stabilization of group management amid ongoing uncertainties such as global geopolitical conflicts and trade issues. Since the three brothers have each been responsible for their respective business divisions, they are expected to drive operations more swiftly within their areas of expertise.
Analysts outside and inside the business community also suggest that Hanwha Group's third-generation succession structure centered on Executive Vice Chairman Kim has become increasingly clear following the separation of affiliates among the three brothers. With his role as executive vice chairman, he is expected to play a larger part in identifying future growth drivers and leading business and investment initiatives within the group. Additionally, the division of roles and responsibility management system among the third generation is anticipated to be strengthened. Previously, Hanwha Group separated its tech and life businesses under Kim (President) through the human resource restructuring of Hanwha Co., Ltd., leaving defense, shipbuilding, aerospace, energy businesses led by Executive Vice Chairman Kim and financial businesses managed by second son Vice Chairman Kim in the surviving entity.

Separately, Hanwha Group announced new CEO appointees for five major affiliates today. The group stated that these individuals were selected as suitable talents to ensure management stability and execute medium-to-long-term growth strategies at each company.
The newly appointed CEO of the Hanwha Aerospace business division, Lee Bu-hwan (CEO), is an expert in R&D (research and development) and overseas operations for ground weapon systems, having previously served as head of Hanwha Aerospace Europe and head of the PGM (Precision-Guided Munitions) business division. He will lead the establishment of overseas defense hubs. Yang Gi-won (CEO), appointed as CEO of Hanwha Systems, is a specialist in new business models who previously served as representative of Hanwha's Global Division and head of the Hanwha Impact business division. Kang Jeong-hun (CEO), appointed as head of the Hanwha Impact business division, is currently the plant manager of Hanwha TotalEnergies Dasan Plant and is regarded as the right person to lead cost innovation and improve profit structures based on his hands-on experience in the petrochemical field.
Lim Dong-jun (CEO), who will take charge of Hanwha Asset Management, previously served as head of the U.S. subsidiary and head of the Strategic Business Unit (Unit). He is expected to lead global business growth by strengthening competitiveness in securities management and expanding alternative investments. Kim Gi-cheol (CEO), who will lead Hanwha Semitech, is currently the representative of Hanwha Vision and has successfully led a successful restructuring of overseas-focused businesses. While serving concurrently as CEO of Hanwha Semitech, he will launch efforts to expand the semiconductor equipment business and secure early market entry.
These Seon Im-doen (CEO)s will be officially appointed after going through each company's shareholder meeting and board of directors. A Hanwha Group official stated, "With these key executive promotions, we aim to dramatically enhance business capabilities across all fields, expand our business scope, and accelerate efforts to secure future growth opportunities."
