Boston Dynamics has opened a manufacturing training facility for the humanoid robot "Atlas" at Hyundai Motor Group's electric vehicle plant in the United States. This infrastructure serves as a foundation to deploy Atlas, which has learned tasks in actual automotive production environments, to global manufacturing sites in the future.

Boston Dynamics announced on the 21st (local time) that it has officially opened and begun operations at the Robotics MetaPlant Application Center (RMAC) at Hyundai Motor Group MetaPlant America (HMGMA) in Georgia, U.S. RMAC serves as a testbed where Atlas learns and verifies tasks in environments similar to actual workplaces before being deployed to automotive manufacturing sites.
RMAC began pilot operations in June. Boston Dynamics plans to establish a separate facility on the HMGMA site next year to expand RMAC's scale to approximately 10 times its current size. By 2027, it aims to enhance Atlas's learning process by increasing data collection and expanding the scope of tasks. Boston Dynamics targets broadening Atlas's application range to include component assembly by 2030, followed by expanding its utilization into high-intensity tasks such as repetitive motions and handling heavy objects.
Hyundai Motor Group plans to sequentially deploy 25,000 Atlas units across Hyundai and Kia global business sites within the next few years. It also envisions establishing a robot production facility in the U.S. with an annual capacity of 30,000 units.
In addition to validating applications for automotive production sites, Boston Dynamics is currently discussing utilization plans with clients across diverse industrial sectors including manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food and beverage, and life sciences. It is reviewing the applicability of Atlas primarily within industries where it currently supplies Spot and Stretch robots.
Jack Jakowski, Boston Dynamics' Chief Product and Technology Officer (CPTO), stated, "We are pioneering enterprise-scale physical AI alongside our dedicated partner, Hyundai Motor Group," adding, "RMAC is a space that strengthens our shared vision of realizing a future where robots perform tasks more safely and productively while expanding human potential."
Hyundai Motor Group and Boston Dynamics will unveil the documentary "Robotics Competition: At the Frontline," produced with Bloomberg Media Studio, on the 30th.
