Hyosung Heavy Industries announced on the 16th that it has completed a new ultra-high-voltage circuit breaker plant covering an area of approximately 18,996 square meters in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.
The new ultra-high-voltage circuit breaker plant will be exclusively dedicated to producing export-oriented circuit breakers rated at 420kV (kilovolts), 550kV, and 800kV. Hyosung Heavy Industries has restructured its existing circuit breaker plant to focus on domestic models, while the new plant is dedicated solely to export-oriented ultra-high-voltage circuit breakers, thereby bifurcating its production system. The company has also established a "one-stop" Yangsan system that handles the entire process—from circuit breaker component manufacturing to assembly, testing, and shipping—at a single location.
With the operation of the new plant, the production capacity for ultra-high-voltage circuit breakers rated 420kV and above has increased by approximately two times compared to before. The production capacity for insulators, a core component, has also been expanded by approximately two times. Hyosung Heavy Industries is the only domestic power equipment manufacturer with in-house insulator production capabilities. The company plans to enhance production efficiency and its ability to meet delivery deadlines for large-scale global orders through the completion of this new plant.
The completion of this ultra-high-voltage circuit breaker plant follows an order from Jo Hyeon-jun (Chairman), based on the judgment that power infrastructure is critical in the AI (artificial intelligence) era, as the company has been building its supply base ahead of expanding global market demand. Jo (Chairman) has consistently emphasized, "The explosive growth of the AI industry will inevitably lead to overloading of the global power grid," and "Business opportunities only come to companies that prepare diligently with a five-year outlook. Therefore, we must change the market landscape through proactive supply chain investments and become a key partner in resolving the 'AI bottleneck' for global customers."
Hyosung Heavy Industries plans to continue expanding its ultra-high-voltage circuit breaker supply in major power markets based on this export-dedicated plant and local production facilities in India, the United States, and elsewhere. In the European market, the company aims to continuously expand its market dominance by strengthening cooperation with local power technology institutional investors centered around its Europe R&D (research and development) center located in the Netherlands, while leading with eco-friendly products and customer-tailored solutions.
The company is also accelerating the expansion of its U.S. production hub. In June last month, it established a joint venture with Quanta, a U.S. infrastructure solutions firm, becoming the first domestic power equipment manufacturer to secure local ultra-high-voltage circuit breaker production capacity in the United States. To date, a total of $300 million (approximately 440 billion won) has been invested in the ultra-high-voltage transformer plant in Memphis, U.S. Once the currently ongoing expansion is completed, the company will possess transformer production capacity at the largest scale within the United States.
