Hanwha Power said Friday that it has obtained concept approval from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for the design of a 1,700 TEU (one TEU equals one 20-foot container) battery-powered container ship.
The certificate ceremony was held at the Marine HYBRID·Electric·Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conference and Exhibition 'MHE 2026' in Bergen, Norway on the 22nd (local time).
The approved design is a conceptual design for a fully electric propulsion container ship equipped with a large-capacity battery energy storage system (ESS) of 151 MWh.
The vessel secures propulsion power through containerized batteries and is designed to eliminate direct carbon emissions during operation by linking with port charging infrastructure. In particular, the application of loadable containerized batteries has enhanced space utilization and ship performance.
With this concept approval, Hanwha Power has strengthened its design capabilities for fully electric propulsion vessels based on large-capacity battery ESS and expanded its portfolio of eco-friendly vessel propulsion solutions. Based on this, the company plans to lay the foundation for entering the next-generation zero-carbon maritime transport market.
Hanwha Power has also secured the basic design for a 1,000 TEU battery-powered container ship. Leveraging its design capabilities by hull type, the company aims to build a lineup of electric propulsion vessels capable of responding to various operating conditions and customer requirements.
In future commercialization processes, the application of various financial and operational models, such as battery leasing and Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), can also be considered. This will help reduce shipowners' initial investment burden and support the adoption of battery-powered vessels.
Hwang Jong-gyu, Senior Executive Officer in charge of Technology Solutions at Hanwha Power, stated, "This ABS concept approval is an important milestone in expanding Hanwha Power's eco-friendly vessel technology capabilities into the field of fully electric propulsion vessels based on large-capacity batteries," adding, "We will respond to the next-generation zero-carbon maritime transport market with integrated solutions combining electric propulsion and containerized battery technology."
Meanwhile, Hanwha Power is a specialized company in energy equipment and eco-friendly solutions. Since establishing its Vessel Solutions Division in 2023, it has been advancing projects such as vessel retrofitting, eco-friendly fuel propulsion, and energy efficiency improvement. The company provides various eco-friendly marine solutions to global shipping companies, including vessel retrofitting, installation of regasification facilities, expansion of cargo hold available capacity, and conversion to eco-friendly fuels.
