Samsung Display CEO Lee Cheong emphasized strengthening technological competitiveness on Friday, saying, "Only differentiated technology that overwhelms competitors is our path to survival."
At the 14th anniversary ceremony held at Samsung Display Research in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on Friday, Lee said, "To protect our present and future, we must once again reaffirm the fundamentals of customer trust and technological leadership," adding that this is the only way forward.
He said, "This year was a business inflection point where we faced challenging goals such as 8.6-generation OLED (organic light-emitting diode), foldables, and AI (artificial intelligence) devices, and we achieved meaningful results through challenge and effort. To protect our present and future, we must once again reaffirm the fundamentals of customer trust and technological leadership."
This presented differentiated product competitiveness as a solution amid growing uncertainty across the display industry due to factors such as rising prices of core components like semiconductors. Lee said, "We must strengthen commercialization capabilities that transcend existing business areas to continuously pioneer new markets."
He also revealed his determination to secure a foundation for future growth through investment in the Asan Phase 2 complex in Chungnam Province.
Lee said, "The Phase 2 investment is not merely an expansion of production capacity, but a bold challenge for growth and our future," adding, "Just as the innovations over the past 14 years have created today's Samsung Display, this new challenge will lead our growth."
Samsung Display resumed construction on the Asan Phase 2 complex after five years, having suspended it in 2021. This is to proactively respond to the expanding demand for OLEDs for IT (information technology) applications, including foldables, laptops, and tablet PCs.
Recently, the company began placing orders for the steel frame construction of a new factory (A7) within the Phase 2 complex. It plans to break ground in early next year and complete construction in 2028.
