LS Cable System and LS Marine Solution are set to fully launch the submarine cable project for the 504th-megawatt (MW) Taean Offshore Wind Farm.
LS Cable System and LS Marine Solution said Monday that they have signed a Contract for Resource Allocation (CRA) with Taean Wind Power to secure schedules for submarine cable supply and construction.
The CRA is an agreement to proactively secure the schedules of cable production facilities and construction vessels prior to the definitive contract. Following their selection as the preferred negotiation partner in 2024, the two companies have further concretized their participation in the submarine cable project through this CRA signing. Currently, they are reviewing cable specifications and the scope of construction through cable engineering and preliminary surveys, with plans to finalize detailed terms, including the contract amount, by the end of the year and sign the definitive contract.
The Taean Offshore Wind Farm is a project jointly developed by Korea Western Power Generation, Singapore-based renewable energy company Vena Energy, and Danish renewable energy investment and development firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). It will be constructed in the waters near Taean County in Chungcheongnam-do Province, with completion targeted for 2030.
This project is the second large-scale offshore wind project that LS Cable System and LS Marine Solution are participating in together, following the Sinan Uui Offshore Wind Farm. LS Marine Solution plans to deploy its submarine cable laying vessel GL2030, which has been expanded and retrofitted to a 7,000-ton class.
Based on their experience with large-scale projects both domestically and internationally, the two companies have a strategy to aggressively target the domestic offshore wind market, which aims for a 55-gigawatt (GW) deployment by 2035. LS Cable System is also moving forward in areas such as the Energy Expressway and the global High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission market, leveraging its turnkey manufacturing and construction capabilities alongside LS Marine Solution.
An official from LS Cable System said, "Because submarine cables involve a unique construction environment at sea, it is important to closely link cable production and installation to enhance on-site responsiveness and accountability." The official added, "We will proceed with the definitive contract without any issues and expand our efforts to capture the domestic offshore wind market."
