With rising prices of key ingredients such as rice, eggs, and seaweed, gimbap has emerged as the food service item with the fastest price increase.
According to the Korea Consumer Agency's Price Information Comprehensive Portal 'Cham-gyegak' on the 17th, as of June, the average price of one roll of gimbap (based on Seoul) was 3,838 won, a 5.9% increase from a year ago. The rate of increase is the highest among other food service items: samgyeopsal (4.3%), kalguksu (3.6%), naengmyeon (2.8%), and samgyetang (2.8%).
Based on Seoul, the average price of one roll of gimbap rose from 3,723 won in December last year to 3,800 won in January this year, reaching 3,838 won again within five months.
This is interpreted as being influenced by rising prices of core ingredients such as rice, eggs, and seaweed used in gimbap. In the second quarter, rice prices rose 13.2% compared to a year earlier, while egg and seaweed prices increased by 9.0% and 2.5%, respectively.
As agricultural product prices continue to rise, gimbap prices are also on an upward trend. According to the consumer price index, which quantifies nationwide price changes by the Korea Statistics Office, gimbap prices rose 4.2% year-on-year in June and increased further by 4.5% in July.
