SK Hynix, the second-largest company by market capitalization in the KOSPI, hit its upper price limit during trading on the 31st. This was influenced by foreign investors launching a massive buying spree as semiconductor investment sentiment recovered following earnings reports from major U.S. tech companies. Samsung Electronics, the number one company by market capitalization, is also surging, shattering its all-time record for the highest rise.
As of 2:23 p.m. on the 31st, SK Hynix was trading at 1.7175 million won, up 395,000 won (29.88%) from the previous trading day in the KOSPI market. On this day, SK Hynix reached its upper limit of 1.718 million won, a rise of 29.95% from the previous trading day at one point during trading.
SK Hynix shattered its all-time record for the highest rise on this day. It was also the first time since the price limit range was expanded to 30% on June 15, 2015, that it hit the upper limit. The previous number one spot was held by a 15.91% rise recorded on the 9th of last month. From third place onward, the records are from the era when the price limit range was 15%.
In particular, foreign investors are making massive purchases of SK Hynix. According to Daishin Securities HTS (Home Trading System), as of 1:19 p.m. on this day (based on KRX·Korea Exchange standards), foreign investors have made a net purchase of 5 trillion 427 billion won worth of SK Hynix shares. At the same time, the entire KOSPI market is seeing a net purchase of 7 trillion 577.1 billion won.
The bullish trend in SK Hynix was influenced by major U.S. tech companies such as Microsoft and Amazon releasing cloud earnings that exceeded market consensus estimates. The investment in AI data centers by big tech has translated into actual revenue, alleviating concerns about a slowdown in semiconductor demand. Consequently, memory semiconductor stocks such as Micron (18.4%) and SanDisk (26.0%) surged in the U.S. stock market overnight as well.
It is also interpreted that Chairman Choi Tae-won of SK Group's stock purchase had an impact. Choi (Chairman) disclosed on the 30th that he purchased approximately 4.9 billion won worth (3,620 shares) of common stock through the exchange. He bought up to the maximum amount possible (less than 5.04 trillion won) without violating the pre-disclosure regulations for transactions made within 30 days. This is the first time Choi (Chairman) has purchased SK Hynix shares in his personal name. Accordingly, SK Square, the largest shareholder of SK Hynix, was also trading at its upper limit of 1.038 million won, up 239,000 won (29.91%) from the previous trading day.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics, which is also owned by Ban Do-che (CEO), shattered its rise record on this day and is approaching its upper limit. As of 2:23 p.m. on this day, Samsung Electronics showed a price of 267,500 won, up 53,750 won (25.97%) from the previous trading day. During trading, Samsung Electronics rose as high as 261,500 won, a gain of 26.33%. This is its all-time highest rise record. The previous record was 15%, set on December 5, 2001. At that time's standards, it would have been the upper limit.
