Singer Seo In-young, 42, revealed that acquaintances who jumped into the stock and cryptocurrency markets have experienced dramatic swings between sudden wealth and sudden poverty.
In Episode 6 of E Channel's variety show "Seo In-young's Trendy Oldie," broadcast on Thursday, Seo and broadcaster Mimi Minu (Kim Min-woo) discussed money with rapper Gree (Kim Dong-hyun).
Gree, who said he diligently saved in a Marine Corps service member's future preparation savings account during his military service, said, "I can save up to 550,000 won per month from my military salary, and I am expected to leave the service with about 2 million won saved." He added, "I also bought a car using my military savings," which surprised the audience.
The episode also highlighted commonalities between Seo and Gree. Beyond both being on the verge of marriage, it was noted that their fathers provide financial advice from close by.
Mimi Minu explained, "Seo In-young's father has taken her card away and manages it directly himself, while Gree's father (Kim Gura) is doing the opposite by encouraging investment. In particular, Seo In-young was scolded severely after spending nearly 200 million won in a month, which led to her allowance being cut to 1 million won."
When asked about her current financial situation, Seo replied, "I spend my 1 million won monthly allowance as soon as I receive it. Isn't that the money given to me to spend? I currently have 40,000 won in my account," eliciting laughter.
Gree, who receives recommendations for stocks and real estate from his father Kim Gura, expressed dissatisfaction by saying, "Because (my dad) is so active, he seems to meet not only experts but also quacks occasionally." He added, "The quality of the information varies greatly."
Mimi Minu, who buys only ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds) instead of individual stocks, said that she has never made a profit. However, he revealed, "Still, everything is in the positive except for one," which drew envy from others.
Listening to their stories, Seo said, "I have never tried cryptocurrency or stocks. I don't even know what the difference between them is. Looking around me, older men who had no money suddenly become rich, only to become poor again before you know it."
