Functional materials startup Atom announced on the 24th that it has secured seed investment from LG Electronics and deep-tech accelerator Bluepoint Partners. The investment amount and corporate valuation remain undisclosed.
This investment follows Atom's spin-off as an independent legal entity through LG Electronics and Bluepoint's joint in-house venture program, 'Studio341'.
Atom is a company that has introduced the semiconductor industry's 'fabless (design-only)' model to the materials sector. It adopts an 'asset efficiency' strategy where core material design is conducted internally while production and technical validation are carried out in collaboration with specialized partners. This approach reduces initial facility investment (CAPEX) burdens and accelerates market entry.
Its first product is an ultra-thin thermal barrier coating designed to control battery fires. With a thickness of 100µm or less, it blocks high-temperature flames. Unlike conventional methods, the coating does not expand in volume when exposed to heat, thereby improving space efficiency within battery systems.
Atom plans to conduct a proof-of-concept (PoC) project for the thermal barrier coating in the second half of this year. It also intends to expand its business into IT and electronics sectors facing intensifying high-heat challenges by adding products such as power-free cooling tapes.
Kim Byung-seong, CEO of Atom, stated, "Through a thorough division-of-labor ecosystem, we will grow into an innovative materials fabless company that rapidly and smoothly supplies functional materials demanded by the market."
Lee In-seong, Head of Bluepoint Venture Studio Group, explained the investment rationale: "This model overcomes facility investment burdens and maximizes market entry speed based on exceptional expertise in materials."
