SamsungSDI said Monday that its North American subsidiary, 'SamsungSDI America (SDIA),' has signed a contract to supply Energy Storage System (ESS) solutions with a capacity of 1 GWh (gigawatt-hour) to Alpha Omega Power (AOP), a U.S. energy specialist company.
Including the first batch contracted at the end of last year, the total scale is 1.5 GWh. The market estimates that the contract value, including the first batch, will reach several hundred billion won.
The product to be supplied under this contract is the integrated ESS solution 'SBB (Samsung Battery Box) 1.7,' equipped with ternary NCA (Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum) batteries. SamsungSDI will manufacture the product at its Star Plus Energy (SPE) plant located in Indiana and supply it within the year.
AOP plans to deploy the ESS solutions supplied by SamsungSDI in a large-scale power project that is set to break ground in Texas next year.
SBB 1.7, which applies high-capacity high-nickel NCA materials, has the same size of 20 feet as the existing product 'SBB 1.5,' but its energy density is 17% higher. It also embodies SamsungSDI's ESS design know-how, including the application of AI-based pre-diagnosis and life prediction algorithms.
In particular, it has obtained certifications such as 'NFPA 855,' the fire safety installation standard of the National Fire Protection Association, and 'UL 9540,' a safety certification related to ESS. It is also evaluated as having excellent fire safety due to the application of EDI (Embedded Direct Injection) technology independently developed by SamsungSDI.
As SamsungSDI is continuously negotiating supply contracts with numerous local customers, additional orders are expected soon.
Paul Choi, CEO of AOP, said, "SamsungSDI's U.S.-made ESS will play an important role in our company's continuous growth," adding, "This second contract will also contribute to strengthening the domestic supply chain that supports next-generation energy infrastructure."
Fabrice Hudry, Vice President and Head of the ESS Team at SamsungSDI's North American subsidiary (SDIA), emphasized, "AOP is one of the fastest-growing independent power producers in the United States," adding, "Our company will continue to expand its business foundation and further strengthen its position in the North American ESS market through differentiated technological capabilities and local production."
