The Ministry of Science and ICT and U.S. semiconductor company AMD held their first operations committee meeting to concretize cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors. The two sides discussed plans for advancing cooperation tasks, including building computing infrastructure utilizing domestic AI semiconductors, establishing an AI research center, and cultivating talent.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it held this meeting on the 4th at the Westin Seoul Parnas Hotel in Seoul Gangnam-gu to review the implementation status and future plans of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in July.
Attendees included Lee Do-gyu, Director of the Information and Communications Policy Office at the Ministry of Science and ICT, and Keith Strier, Senior Vice President of Global AI Markets at AMD. The two sides reviewed the progress of key tasks, including building heterogeneous AI computing infrastructure linking AMD's CPUs (Central Processing Units) and GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) with domestic NPUs (Neural Processing Units), establishing an AMD AI research center, supporting universities, and cultivating AI talent.
Heterogeneous AI computing infrastructure is a method that utilizes different types of semiconductors together. The core of the cooperation task is to link AMD's CPUs and GPUs with NPUs developed by domestic companies to respond to diverse AI computing demands. However, specific details such as the scale of construction, participating companies, and the schedule for establishing the research center were not disclosed.
Previously, Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, who visited Korea on the 7th of last month, met with Ryu Je-myung, Second Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, to reaffirm their will to cooperate in the AI semiconductor field. At that time, the two sides also held an industry briefing session for the development of the domestic AI ecosystem.
AMD also held its representative AI technology event, 'Advancing AI World Tour Seoul 2026,' in Korea for the first time on this day. More than 1,300 people pre-registered for the event, and domestic companies cooperating with AMD in the field of AI computing infrastructure, such as LG Electronics, More, and Mango Boost, participated.
Second Vice Minister Ryu attended the event together with Senior Vice President Keith Strier, touring exhibition booths to view displays related to domestic companies' AI technology and computing infrastructure. Director Lee participated in a panel discussion held under the theme 'Building Korea's AI Nation,' discussing the direction of development and cooperation plans for the Korean AI ecosystem.
Second Vice Minister Ryu stated, "The fact that AMD is holding its representative event, 'Advancing AI,' in Korea for the first time signifies that it considers Korea an important AI cooperation partner," adding, "We will strive to ensure that cooperation tasks are promoted without hindrance so that they lead to the growth of domestic AI semiconductor companies and the strengthening of the competitiveness of the AI ecosystem."
