TV presenter Baek Ji-yeon, a former news anchor, stated that a famous actor felt a sense of relative deprivation amid the rising trend in domestic stocks.
On the 12th, a video titled "The human instinct to be more interested in others' unhappiness than their happiness" was released on the YouTube channel 'Jigeum Baek Ji-yeon'.
In the video, Baek Ji-yeon said, "Everyone can be sufficiently satisfied and happy just by having what they have, yet they are always tormented by a sense of relative unhappiness. If only this were absent, people could become much happier, but the problem is that even knowing this, we cannot control our own feelings."

She explained, "There was a time when domestic stocks were soaring. That is when the term 'FOMO' (Fear Of Missing Out) emerged. It is the feeling that everyone else is making big money while only I am not. Even though I am not in the negative and my situation remains as it was, every time I hear stories of others making big money, I feel like I have become a sudden pauper."
Baek Ji-yeon then shared an anecdote about how even a financially well-off famous actor experiences relative unhappiness.
She said, "There is actually a famous actor in my circle whom everyone knows just by hearing the name. He is very wealthy and rich, yet he was depressed, saying, 'I feel like I am the only one who has become a sudden pauper.' He reportedly suffered from depression for a long time. This does not seem to be an issue of having or not having something, but rather a problem common to everyone."
Baek Ji-yeon also stated, "It is said that when someone else makes money, it is news, but when my friend makes money, it is an incident," while mentioning related research.
She shared, "According to American economist Charles Kindleberger, there is nothing that takes away one's peace of mind and judgment as much as seeing others make money." She added, "A survey conducted among members of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that respondents said they would prefer their own salary to double than for the salaries of people around them to be halved."
She added, "I too have often been distressed by comparing myself with others. I have also felt envious. I have experienced unnecessary unhappiness. That is a common emotion among all humans."

Baek Ji-yeon said, "Ultimately, we are always comparing ourselves with others and feeling unhappy, but for us to live well, the criteria and goals that define me must not be solely money, success, victory, or fame. Because if things go wrong or they are lost, I will collapse."
She further advised, "One must have diverse purposes in life. You should have a diverse list of elements that define you and make you happy, and maintain them. That will help keep me from being shaken."
