Actor Yoo Jae-myung candidly revealed that he had seriously considered whether to take on a role in the film "Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng."
On Monday, a press screening and press conference for the film "Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng" were held at CGV Yongsan Ipark Mall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Director Lee Yong-jae, along with actors Lee Sun-bin, Yoo Jae-myung, Kim Young-min, and Jeon Seok-ho, attended the event.
The film "Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng" is a mission comedy depicting the chaotic journey of Mang Bo-ram (played by Lee Sun-bin), a Korean language teacher from a small provincial town who inadvertently joins the question-making headquarters—a facility sealed off for 40 days to protect the "CSAT question creation," a Level 2 state secret in South Korea—as she strives to create a "flawless question" free of typos and controversy.
In the film, Yoo takes on the role of Moon Joo-yeol, the powerful but irritating yet un-hateable figure behind the scenes at the question-making headquarters, marking an image transformation for him.
Speaking about the character Moon Joo-yeol, Yoo said, "It hurt my heart that adults are not always righteous," and added, "Since I have a certain public image, I actually considered declining the role."
He continued, "I have played many villainous roles before, but I wondered if I really had to take on such a despicable character. However, because the film deals with the CSAT, I felt it would offer a glimpse into a facet of our society, which led me to embrace this image change."
"Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng" is scheduled for release on Oct. 28.
