LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics have launched a competition to secure the domestic high-efficiency heating and cooling market by supplying heat pumps to Jeju Island. Both companies are accelerating the expansion of heat pump in Korea, leveraging solutions already validated in Europe.
LG Electronics announced on the 2nd that it held the 'Official No. 1 Plaque Unveiling Ceremony for the Heat Pump Project' at a single-family home in Yeongpyeong-dong, Jeju City, on the 31st of last month. Jeju Island is promoting the 'Heating Electrification Project,' which replaces fossil fuel boilers with high-efficiency air-source heat pumps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower heating costs.
The first installation target was a single-family home of approximately 182㎡ (55 pyeong) occupied by a five-person household, where LG Electronics' integrated heat pump system boiler, the 'LG Therma V Heat Pump Boiler,' was installed. LG Electronics will also handle post-installation management.
In the first half of this year, Jeju Island selected 1,042 households as recipients of heat pump support. Installations will proceed sequentially through October. Among them, LG Electronics was designated as the largest contractor, responsible for 450 households—the highest number. The remaining units will be installed jointly by Samsung Electronics and Daesung Hi-Tech Energy.
The LG Therma V Heat Pump System Boiler installed at the Jeju project site operates on an air-source heat pump principle, generating approximately 4 to 5 times more thermal energy than the input power. Compared to existing fossil fuel boilers, it can reduce energy costs by about 40% to 60%, also expected to contribute to carbon emission reductions.
Integrating the outdoor unit with major components eliminates the need for separate refrigerant piping work and allows existing hot water piping in older homes to be used as-is. It also applies R32 refrigerant, which has a low Global Warming Potential (GWP), and supports remote control via the 'LG ThinQ' app.

Samsung Electronics also conducted a demonstration of its integrated heating and cooling heat pump 'EHS All In One' in Jeju on the same day. This next-generation HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) integrated solution provides not only heating and domestic hot water but also air conditioning.
Previously, separate installations of air conditioners and boilers were required for cooling and heating, respectively. However, 'EHS All In One' delivers both functions through a single outdoor unit. It also incorporates waste heat recovery technology, achieving up to twice the operating efficiency compared to conventional heating methods.
Samsung Electronics is also conducting demonstrations of 'EHS All In One' at Samsung Material & Housing Performance Research Institute, targeting multi-family housing environments such as apartments. Data collected from these demonstrations will be utilized as foundational material for future expansion of heat pump in Korea.
LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics plan to accelerate their penetration into the domestic market by leveraging residential heat pumps that have proven competitive in the European market. Both companies are already expanding their business foundations in the global heat pump market, including Europe. In Jeju Island, they aim to support heat pump for a total of 2,460 households across the region by year-end.
Lee Jae-seong, President and Head of LG Electronics ES Business Division, stated, "Based on technology and large-scale project experience validated in global markets such as Europe, we will lead the domestic heat pump project." Kim Chul-ki, Executive Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics DA Business Division, also emphasized, "Following the expansion of domestic supply of heat pump boilers, we will rapidly introduce 'EHS All In One,' already validated in the European market, to Korea."
