If you are looking for a vehicle that combines the quietness of an electric car with the spaciousness of a mid-size SUV (multi-purpose sports vehicle), the BMW 'New iX' is worth considering. For a driver in their 30s who commutes to the city on weekdays, goes camping with friends on weekends, and transports parents to wedding venues during family events, one car must fulfill multiple roles. The New iX is a facelifted version of the first-generation iX launched in 2021, available in three trims: xDrive45, xDrive60, and the high-performance M70 xDrive. The test drive model was the mid-range xDrive60 M Sport Pro.
First, we were impressed by its acceleration that belies its size. The xDrive60 delivers a maximum output of 544 horsepower and peak torque of 78.0 kg·m, accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. Following the facelift, power increased by 21 horsepower. Even when pressing the accelerator deeply, the vehicle's weight of 2.6 tons did not feel cumbersome. The steering responded without delay, reaffirming BMW's identity even in this electrified model. Rear-wheel steering narrowed the turning radius in underground parking lots and narrow alleys, making the large body appear agile.
Quietness is also a strong point. Even at speeds of 100 km/h, wind noise and road noise did not intrude significantly, so there was no need to raise one's voice when conversing with passengers in the back seat. Ride comfort further enhances this experience. The air suspension effectively filtered out minor bumps and speed bumps, and the vehicle quickly regained its posture after traversing undulations, preventing prolonged swaying for rear-seat passengers.
Living space and cargo capacity earn a passing grade for those who enjoy outdoor activities. The wheelbase reaches 3 meters, and the flat interior floor provides ample legroom even in the center rear seat. The trunk's standard capacity is 500 liters, offering enough room to carry a four-person tent, tarp, folding chairs, and an ice chest with ease. Folding down the second row expands capacity to a maximum of 1,750 liters, allowing bulky camping gear to fit without difficulty.
The exterior appearance became more distinct following the facelift. The kidney grille, filled with black diagonal patterns, now features iconic glow lighting along its border, and the daytime running lights have changed to vertical orientation. This enhances presence during nighttime driving or when stationary. With dimensions of 4,965 mm in length, 1,975 mm in width, and 1,695 mm in height, the vehicle is large, but its gently sloping roofline and black 22-inch wheels reduce visual weight.
Inside, the first thing that catches the eye is the curved display integrating a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch control display. Crystal materials were applied to the iDrive controller and seat adjustment buttons, while leather finishes extend broadly across door trims and armrests. The panoramic glass roof 'Sky Lounge,' which covers both front and rear rows, adjusts glass transparency with a single button instead of opening or closing sunshades. The Bowers & Wilkins sound system delivers clear audio without requiring high volume levels in the quiet cabin.
The driving range on a single charge is 509 km under domestic certification standards, an increase of 45 km from the facelifted version. Charging the battery from 10% to 80% via fast charging takes approximately 35 minutes. On a round trip of about 100 km between Seoul and Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, the average energy consumption was 4.5 km/kWh, exceeding the certified combined fuel economy of 4 km/kWh.
There are also areas for improvement. Integrating many functions, including climate control, into the display causes visual distraction when operating them while driving. Drivers who prefer physical buttons will need time to adapt. The inability to adjust the second-row seatback angle is also a drawback for long journeys. The New iX's pricing is 124.8 million won for the xDrive45, 153.8 million won for the xDrive60, and 177.7 million won for the high-performance M70 xDrive model.
