Regarding allegations of 'family favoritism' that emerged during the contract process for rally supplies by the Samsung Electronics Labor Union, Choi Seung-ho, chairman of the Samsung Group Early-Career Union (hereinafter referred to as the Early-Career Union), admitted to having contracted with a company owned by his father-in-law. However, he clarified that no favoritism based on familial ties or personal gain was involved.
According to the electronics industry on the 9th, the Early-Career Union stated regarding the recently raised allegations about product contracts: "Since the formation of the Joint Struggle Headquarters in March, numerous product and service contracts have been carried out for promotional activities and rally preparations." It further noted, "It is true that the representative of Company A, which handled the product contract, is the chairman's father-in-law." The union then drew a clear line by stating, "However, claims that the company was selected solely due to its familial relationship with the chairman or that the chairman gained personal benefits from this are not factual."
The Early-Career Union explained, "During the dispute actions and rally preparation process, it was often necessary to secure products within a set timeframe. Therefore, companies were selected based on a comprehensive evaluation of price, quality, delivery schedules, and work experience for each contract." It added, "The order for vests also followed the same criteria."
According to the union, among the competing companies, factors such as having the lowest price and being able to meet the requested delivery schedule were taken into consideration. The union further clarified that these decisions were made with the approval of the Joint Struggle Headquarters' executive board.
Choi Seung-ho asserted, "There is no fact that any financial benefits, including rebates, commissions, or refunds, were directed to Choi Seung-ho personally through this contract." He continued, "On the contrary, by proceeding with the contract at a lower price compared to other bids, we aimed to reduce union fund expenditures while simultaneously meeting the urgent vest distribution schedule." He also added, "The contract with Company A was not made to provide unfair benefits to the chairman or his relatives but was executed based on a comparison of actual contract conditions such as current prices and delivery schedules. Currently, even such contracts are being excluded from consideration altogether due to concerns that they could be problematic from the members' perspective."
Meanwhile, within Samsung Electronics, allegations arose that Choi Seung-ho contracted with a company owned by his father-in-law during the vest ordering process of the Joint Struggle Headquarters, sparking controversy over family favoritism.
