Lotte Fine Chemical announced on the 8th that it has signed a contract with Amogy Energy (a joint venture between GS E&C and Amogy) to supply green ammonia for power generation in Korea for the first time.
Under the agreement, Lotte Fine Chemical will supply 1,500 tons of green ammonia over one year starting next year to Amogy Energy's ammonia-based distributed power generation facilities. This volume is sufficient to demonstrate a 1 MW (megawatt)-class power generation facility.
Amogy Energy plans to begin commercial operations in 2028 and gradually expand the power generation scale to a maximum of 40 MW thereafter. Lotte Fine Chemical holds priority negotiation rights for supplying the green ammonia required for this expansion.
The contract is significant as it marks the first expansion of green ammonia use for carbon-free distributed power generation in Korea. Lotte Fine Chemical signed an MOU with GS E&C in September last year to cooperate on carbon-free electricity production based on clean ammonia. Last month, it also signed an MOU with Amogy (Amogy).
Lotte Fine Chemical, leveraging Asia's largest ammonia distribution infrastructure, imported green ammonia for the first time in the world in March. In April, it successfully commercialized bunkering of green ammonia as ship fuel, a world-first achievement, leading the development of a global clean ammonia supply chain.
Hwang Seok-min, head of the ammonia business division at Lotte Fine Chemical, stated, "Recently, large-scale green ammonia supply contracts have been signed in Europe and Japan, intensifying competition in building supply chains." He emphasized, "Going forward, we will create diverse demand, including for power generation and maritime bunkering, and continue to build a supply chain platform based on our related infrastructure."
Kim Ki-tae of AMoon E-neo-ji (CEO) said, "We will expand carbon-free power generation businesses centered in Pohang and establish a local production, local consumption distributed power model that supplies stable, carbon-free clean electricity to companies in regional industrial complexes."
Meanwhile, Amogy Energy is a joint venture established last April by GS E&C and Amogy (Amogy), a U.S.-based ammonia-based carbon-free power generation solution company. It will construct a distributed power plant in the specialized distributed energy zone within the Pohang Yeongil Bay Industrial Complex that generates electricity without carbon emissions by injecting green ammonia as fuel.
