Secondary battery equipment manufacturer PNTMS is moving forward with the establishment of its local subsidiary, "PNTMS Thailand." The company aims to secure a foothold for expansion into Southeast Asia, including Thailand, while also seeking to expand local production lines. In addition, PNTMS is expected to continue participating in the design of Thailand's secondary battery industry.
On the 2nd, PNTMS held a tripartite MOU signing ceremony at the Gumi headquarters of its parent company, PNT, together with PNT and the Thailand SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) Promotion Agency (OSMEP). The agreement centers on mutual cooperation regarding entry into the Thai battery equipment industry and strategic projects. Prior to the signing ceremony, the Thailand SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) Promotion Agency signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) at Gumi City Hall for the development of the secondary battery industry.
Representatives from PNTMS, PNT, and the Thailand SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) Promotion Agency plan to form a joint working group in the future to coordinate detailed project execution content and schedules. This is seen as a green light for the expanded entry of South Korea's secondary battery equipment industry into Southeast Asia.
PNTMS is currently pushing forward with contracts to supply core component production equipment for secondary batteries to Thailand by year-end. It is preparing contracts for two sets of separator equipment. To this end, PNTMS has decided to establish the PNTMS Thailand subsidiary locally to secure a foothold. The PNTMS Thailand subsidiary is expected to become the hub for South Korea-Thailand secondary battery business, encompassing even the supply of secondary battery equipment by its parent company, PNT, in the future.
The Thai government is cultivating the secondary battery industry as a national strategic project in response to surging demand for electric vehicles, electric bikes, and ESS (Energy Storage Systems). Major industrial parks within Thailand are currently dominated by Chinese companies' technology and influence. To achieve technological balance and industrial independence, the Thai government has designated South Korea as a key partner and has been in close communication with PNTMS.
Under the agreement, the Thailand SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) Promotion Agency will support administrative procedures such as PNTMS's establishment of a local subsidiary, investment permits, and product/technology certification. It also agreed to help discover business opportunities for PNT by linking networks with local battery manufacturers, industrial parks, and research institutions.
PNTMS viewed this MOU as highly significant in that it laid the groundwork for participating from the design stage of Thailand's secondary battery industry. In fact, the Thailand SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) Promotion Agency has a vision to develop secondary battery-related technologies and equipment into national strategic projects step by step, starting with the construction of separator equipment. The plan is to complete Thailand's own technology within five years and subsequently export that technology across Southeast Asia.
Oh Young-hyun, CEO of PNTMS, said, "It is meaningful to sign the MOU based on the trust we have built with the Thai government." He added, "Starting with separator equipment supply, we will gradually expand our business scope to cover all secondary battery process equipment, successfully transplanting the secondary battery technology of PNT and PNTMS into the Southeast Asian market while strengthening both scale and substance."
Panita Chinnawat, [Title/Role] of the Thailand SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) Jin Heung-cheong (Minister), stated, "We highly appreciate that South Korea is a world power in battery innovation, and we are confident that Thailand has the potential to grow into a key automotive industry hub for ASEAN." She added, "Through this cooperation, we will connect with South Korean technology to enable the Thai automotive industry to transition into a sustainable future industry."
PNTMS's entry into Thailand is the first in the separator equipment industry. PNTMS is the first domestic company to possess full-line design and manufacturing capabilities for secondary battery separator production. It is also known that PNTMS recently began developing technologies to improve yield and quality through AI.
