The Broadcast Media and Communications Commission (hereinafter referred to as the Commission) has revoked its decision to appoint Kim Sung-geun as a supplementary director of the Broadcasting Culture Promotion Foundation, following an agreement reached with the Seoul Administrative Court.
On the 29th, during its 26th plenary meeting, the Commission announced that it had canceled the August 28, 2023 appointment of Kim Sung-geun as a supplementary director of the Broadcasting Culture Promotion Foundation (BCPF) by the former Korea Communications Commission. The BCPF is the largest shareholder of MBC and consists of nine directors in total. It holds the authority to appoint and dismiss the president of MBC.
Earlier, on April 27, the Seoul Administrative Court recommended that the Commission cancel Kim Sung-geun's appointment as a supplementary director of the BCPF and withdraw the related lawsuit filed by Kwon Tae-seon, a former Lee (President) director of the foundation.
This decision followed the court's ruling that the dismissal of Kwon Lee (President) was unlawful. With the cancellation of the dismissal order against Kwon Lee (President), there was no longer any justification for maintaining Kim Sung-geun's appointment as a supplementary director to fill the vacancy.
The Commission stated, "In the prior lawsuit concerning the revocation of the dismissal of Director Kwon Tae-seon, the grounds for his dismissal were not recognized. Consequently, there is no practical benefit in upholding the subsequent appointment of Kim as a supplementary director."
On this day, the Commission also rejected an objection filed by OBS Gyeongin TV (OBS Gyeongin TV), which had challenged administrative penalties related to violations of its re-licensing conditions.
Additionally, the Commission decided to issue correction orders under Article 99, Paragraph 1, Item 2 of the Broadcasting Act against five product sales-type broadcasting channel operators—W Shopping Co., Ltd., Our Home Shopping Co., Ltd., NS Shopping Co., Ltd., KT Alpha Co., Ltd., and TRN Co., Ltd.—for violating conditions imposed during their re-approval in 2024 and 2025 pursuant to Article 17 of the Broadcasting Act.
