'The Second Term of the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy Committee' was launched by Lee Jae-myung, the full-time deputy chairman, who stated, "We will create results that citizens can feel quickly."
On the 30th, Deputy Chairman Lee said on social media (SNS), "We will strive to realize South Korea as an 'irreplaceable nation' within the global AI core supply chain, going beyond the top three AI powers."
Deputy Chairman Lee, who previously served as the first AI Future Planning Chief under President Lee Jae-myung's administration, was appointed today as the full-time deputy chairman of the National AI Strategy Committee, which operates directly under the president. The National AI Strategy Committee is the highest-level body for discussing national AI strategy, with the president serving as its chairperson.
Deputy Chairman Lee remarked, "I believe my experience in AI research and development and commercialization in the private sector, along with my tenure as the AI Future Planning Chief at Cheong Wa Dae where I helped formulate the national AI strategy, were highly valued," adding, "I feel a heavy sense of responsibility."
He continued, "AI competition is now rapidly expanding beyond mere technological rivalry into a technology and security contest between nations. There is much we must do ahead, and my shoulders are heavy with this burden."
Emphasizing that "South Korea has clear opportunities," he stated, "If we connect our strengths—such as a robust manufacturing base, high AI adoption rates, and advanced power infrastructure—to the national AI strategy, South Korea will become an indispensable nation within the global AI core supply chain."
He also expressed his intention to cooperate with the Ministry of Science and ICT, which leads AI policy, and the Office of the AI Future Planning Chief. Deputy Chairman Lee noted, "Many key issues that needed resolution during the four-month leadership vacuum have accumulated. Together with Vice Minister of Economy and Finance Byung-hoon Bae, newly appointed AI Future Planning Chief Hae-min Lee, government committee members, and private sector experts, we will upgrade our mid-to-long-term strategy one step further to deliver tangible results that citizens can feel quickly."
Deputy Chairman Lee previously served as Director of the Naver Clova AI Lab Research Institute and Head of the Naver Cloud AI Innovation Center, leading domestic AI technology development and the expansion of 'sovereign AI.' After President Lee's inauguration, he took on the role of the first AI Future Planning Chief in the Presidential Office.
