The launch of the 'Korean-type Launch Vehicle' Nuri-rocket No. 5 is approaching in one month.
According to the Space Administration and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), Nuri-rocket No. 5 will be launched between 12:23 p.m. and 1:23 p.m. on October 7 at the Naro Space Center in Goheung, South Jeolla Province.
Nuri-rocket No. 5 will carry a total of 15 satellites, including Ultra-small Constellation Satellites Nos. 2 through 6 (five units in total). This is the largest payload ever carried by a Nuri launch.
The main payload, Ultra-small Constellation Satellites Nos. 2 through 6, are satellites designed to conduct high-density, precise observations of the Korean Peninsula and surrounding sea areas from low Earth orbit. Following the test vehicle launch in 2024 and the verification vehicle launch in 2025, this marks the first satellite group launched in the Yangsan configuration. The satellites are equipped with electro-optical cameras capable of capturing images with black-and-white resolution of 1 meter and color resolution of 4 meters.
The lead institutional investor, KAIST Satellite Research Institute, plans to complete a full constellation of 10 units by 2027, aiming to photograph the Korean Peninsula region more than three times daily.
As secondary payloads, 10 cube satellites developed by domestic industry, academia, and research institutions will be carried: △Domestic Component Verification Satellite (KARI) △Daejeon Sat-1 (Daejeon Metropolitan City) △BEE-1012 (Space LinTech) △Sejong5 (Hancom Space) △UEL-Y-Sys (Unmanned Exploration Research Institute) △SLEDGE (O&V Space) △PERSAT-02 (Quaternion) △COMMANDv1 (Perigee Aerospace) △CPSat (Chosun University and Pusan National University) △GBSAT (KAIST), among others. Each satellite will ride the Nuri rocket into low Earth orbit to test component performance in the space environment or monitor marine and terrestrial environments.
Additionally, support messages collected through the 'Dream Capsule Project' by citizens will also be sent into space. The Space Administration gathered support messages for the Nuri-rocket 5th launch via its website until August. The messages will be converted into images and carried on top of the Nuri rocket along with the satellites.
Meanwhile, the Space Administration has begun on-site inspections ahead of the Nuri launch. The exact launch time will be finalized on the day of launch and may be adjusted within the launch standby period from the 8th to 14 depending on sudden variables such as weather conditions.
