
The Ministry of Science and ICT will disseminate semiconductor fab operation know-how transferred by South Korea's three major semiconductor companies (Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and DB HiTek) to public nanofabs nationwide.
The Ministry of Science and ICT said Friday that it will hold a 'Samsung Electronics-Nano Convergence Technology Institute Public NanoFab Operation Efficiency Consulting Performance Report Meeting' at the Nano Convergence Technology Institute of Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH).
This event is a follow-up to the memorandum of understanding signed last March between the Ministry of Science and ICT and the three companies.
Samsung Electronics' DS Division's Mutual Prosperity Center transferred know-how on private-sector semiconductor fab operation and management to the Nano Convergence Technology Institute from March to August. Accordingly, the Nano Convergence Technology Institute comprehensively strengthened its foundations for safety, cleanliness, equipment reliability, and process service response.
In particular, the company said it thoroughly identified potential safety risks, including chemical storage, fire protection facilities, leaks and piping, while significantly improving on-site management in line with Samsung Electronics' "5S3Jung" manufacturing space management principles. The 5S principles stand for sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain, while the 3Jung principles call for genuine products, correct quantities and designated locations.
The ministry plans to sequentially expand the innovative models identified through consulting to the Korea Institute of Nano Technology, Nano Convergence Technology Institute, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) Semiconductor Joint Research Center, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) Next-Generation Sensor & Semiconductor Research Center, and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI)'s Materials, Components, and Equipment Technology Center.
In addition, the consulting results will be disseminated to all institutional investors participating in the public nanoFab linkage and integration platform 'MoaFab', and best practices will be shared.
Ji Hyeon-gi, director of Samsung Electronics' DS Division's Mutual Prosperity Center, said, "We will contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of South Korea's semiconductor ecosystem by integrating manufacturing innovation know-how into public nanofabs."
Yoon Kyung-sook, policy officer for Basic and Fundamental Research at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "We will strengthen public-private cooperation with the three semiconductor companies centered on MoaFab, including private consulting, transfer of idle equipment, and utilization of experienced private-sector personnel."
