Lisa Su, Chairman and CEO of AMD, is set to return to South Korea for the first time in seven months. As she is expected to meet with domestic AI (artificial intelligence) semiconductor companies and senior government officials, attention is turning to whether specific business cooperation plans will be discussed.
According to government and industry sources on the 30th, a meeting attended by Chairman Su is being strongly considered for next month’s 8th in Seoul. Plans are underway for CEOs of major domestic NPU (Neural Processing Unit) companies, including Rebellions, DeepX, and Mobiline, to attend the event.
During her visit, Chairman Su is also expected to meet with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, Baek Jong-hoon, before or after the meeting. Follow-up cooperation plans regarding the AI semiconductor ecosystem Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Ministry of Science and ICT and AMD in July are likely to be a key agenda item.
At that time, the Ministry of Science and ICT and AMD agreed to promote the construction and verification of AI computing infrastructure linking AMD’s CPUs (Central Processing Units) and GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) with domestic NPUs, as well as the establishment of domestic AI research hubs and talent development. If a direct meeting with domestic NPU companies is arranged during this visit, attention will focus on whether the cooperation concepts outlined in the MOU will translate into concrete business projects.
Whether additional meetings with major domestic companies, including Samsung Electronics, will take place is also of interest. During her March visit, Chairman Su met consecutively with Lee Jae-yong, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, Choi Soo-yeon, CEO of Naver, Kim Seong-hoon, CEO of Upstage, and others. On the government side, she met with Im Moon-young, Vice Chair of the National AI Strategy Committee (currently a member of the National Assembly), Ha Jeong-woo, Presidential Office AI Future Planning Senior Secretary (currently Vice Chair of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee), and others to discuss AI industry cooperation plans.
In particular, Chairman Su met with Lee (Chairman) at Seongjiwon at that time, and also held a separate meeting with Chung Young-hee, Representative Director and Vice Chairman of the DS (Device Solutions) Division at Samsung Electronics. If a meeting between Chairman Su and Lee (Chairman) takes place this time as well, follow-up plans for semiconductor business cooperation discussed in March may be put on the table.
AMD is also scheduled to hold “Advancing AI Korea” domestically in November. This will be the first time AMD has held its flagship AI event, “Advancing AI,” in South Korea. The event serves as a platform to introduce AI infrastructure strategies, including AI accelerators, CPUs, networking, and software, to customers, developers, and partners, and was arranged on the occasion of the MOU signed with the Ministry of Science and ICT.
