Samsung Biologics announced on the 4th that it earned a top-tier rating in Sustainalytics' "2026 ESG Risk Assessment," conducted by the global environmental, social and governance (ESG) risk assessment firm Sustainalytics.
Sustainalytics is a subsidiary of Morningstar, a global investment information provider. It assesses the non-financial risks and management levels of approximately 16,000 companies worldwide each year. The assessment grades consist of five tiers, with lower risk scores receiving higher evaluations. The top-tier rating, "Negligible" (extremely minimal risk), is awarded to companies scoring below 10 points. The assessment results are used as key indicators in the decision-making processes and stewardship activities of global institutional investors.
In this assessment, Samsung Biologics received a total score of 9 points, earning a "Negligible" rating, which represents a one-tier upgrade from last year's "Low Risk." Notably, among all assessed companies globally, Samsung Biologics ranked 4th out of 842 firms in the global pharmaceutical industry sector. This corresponds to a top-tier performance within the top 0.5%.
In this assessment, Samsung Biologics was recognized for its comprehensive efforts to enhance management systems across all ESG areas and to proactively expand information disclosure.
In the Environmental category, Samsung Biologics significantly strengthened its environmental management system by conducting environmental audits and formulating plans for recycling hazardous waste. In the Social category, it enhanced social responsibility fulfillment and information transparency through the establishment of diversity policies and the public disclosure of quality and safety targets. In the Governance category, it was recognized for advancing its governance management system through the execution of ethics audits and the setting of board diversity goals.
Samsung Biologics identifies and executes improvement tasks based on annual assessment results from major evaluation agencies to elevate its ESG management level. In particular, in the MSCI ESG Assessment, it has raised its rating every year since 2023, achieving an "A" rating this September. In May last month, it was included in the Dow Jones Best-in-Class World Index (DJBIC) for the fifth consecutive year. In January last month, it received the highest rating, "Platinum," awarded to top 1% companies in the EcoVadis ESG assessment.
Samsung Biologics continues its order-winning activities, recently signing a new contract worth 434.3 billion won for contract manufacturing organization (CMO) services of biopharmaceuticals with a global company. Its cumulative order value has increased to a total of $22.3 billion (approximately 30 trillion won).
John Rim, CEO of Samsung Biologics, stated, "This assessment result is the outcome of our consistent efforts to enhance our company-wide ESG risk management system," adding, "We will continue responsible management and transparent information disclosure to further solidify the trust of global stakeholders."
