Former baseball player Lee Dae-ho (44), who played for the Lotte Giants, whose home base is Busan, recounted how he became upset with Gimhae-born comedian Yang Sang-guk (42) over his dialect.
On the the 23rd broadcast of MBC's variety show 'Radio Star,' Lee Dae-ho appeared as a guest alongside actor Sunwoo Yong-yeo, singer Young Tak, and comedian Kim Gyu-won.
During the broadcast, Kim Kuk-jin asked Lee Dae-ho, "Have you ever nearly caused a broadcasting incident because of your fake Busan dialect?"
Lee Dae-ho mentioned an incident from April when he filmed YouTube content with Yang Sang-guk, broadcaster Haha, and comedian Park Young-jin. He pointed out, "People who don't actually live in Busan keep using the Busan dialect, which is funny. Especially Haha hyung doesn't even sound like he's from Busan."
He continued, "(Yang) Sang-guk uses words that almost sound like what a Gimhae grandmother would say—words that Busan people can't understand. He keeps using expressions like 'jjabae' (meaning fake), but that's not commonly used in Busan. They call it 'jjagari,' he explained.
Lee Dae-ho revealed, "I casually told him, 'Sang-guk, that's not (Busan language),' but viewers didn't look kindly on me. They asked why I kept telling him off during a broadcast."
He also said Yang Sang-guk's remark, "Ma! Let's settle this," caused an issue. He explained, "In Busan, saying 'ma' is like saying 'let's die.' When a senior says 'ma' to a junior, it means 'drop the senior-junior hierarchy and let's fight.' It's about breaking the relationship."
He added, "Normally, if a junior said that, a punch would come first. But since it was on TV, I joked, 'Ma? Do you want to die?' Yang Sang-guk quoted a line from the movie 'Friend,' so I responded with the same line as a joke, but viewers criticized me again," expressing his frustration.
