The film “Assassin(s)” attracted 160,000 viewers nationwide on Hangul Day, bringing it within reach of surpassing the 3rd million mark.
According to the Integrated Ticketing System of the Korean Film Council on the 10th, “Assassin(s)” maintained its No. 1 spot at the box office by drawing 160,976 viewers nationwide on the 9th. Its cumulative audience count stands at 2,745,841.
Since its release, “Assassin(s)” has been engulfed in controversy over historical distortion and even ceded the No. 1 position to “Tazza: The Divine Song” and the Japanese animated film “Chiikawa Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island,” but it reclaimed the top spot as it entered its third week.
Following this, the film gathered 160,000 viewers during the Hangul Day holiday, regaining upward momentum. With daily audience numbers expected to approach 200,000 over the weekend as well, the film is projected to reach the 3rd million milestone as early as the 11th and at the latest around the 12th.
Meanwhile, “Assassin(s)” is a film depicting the story of a journalist and a detective who track down the mastermind behind the assassination attempt on First Lady Yoo Young-soo that occurred on August 15, 1974, starring Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il, Lee Min-ho, and others.
“Assassin(s)” presented a “power institutional investor conspiracy theory” — differing from the official investigation’s conclusion regarding the shooting incident — as an in-film hypothesis, sparking a clash between criticism of historical distortion and counterarguments that it represents the imagination inherent to feature films.
