As allegations of school violence against actress Cha Ye-ryeon (41) have spread, the "fire" has also reached the SNS (social media) of her husband, actor Joo Sang-wook (48).
On the 1st, comments questioning his stance or criticizing him regarding his wife Cha Ye-ryeon's school violence allegations have been pouring in on Joo Sang-wook's SNS. In particular, reactions demanding an explanation continued to appear on photos taken together with Cha Ye-ryeon.
Netizens reacted with comments such as "From margin investing (investing with debt) to school violence, you seem to have made a mistake in your marriage," "At this point, it feels like he was scammed into the marriage," "What will you do if your daughter becomes a victim of school violence?" and "They say his wife hit her friends during her school days. Isn't he also being beaten up by his wife?"
The controversy began with an exposé post recently uploaded to an online community.
A person who identified themselves as a graduate of Junggye Middle School in Nowon District, Seoul, claimed in the post that they were subjected to continuous bullying and physical violence during their middle school years by a female actress born in 1985. They stated that they suffered injuries including severe facial swelling from being slapped and damage to their eardrum, and also released photos from their graduation album.
The individual stated, "I hope you will step down from all broadcasting and YouTube activities and sincerely reflect and apologize," adding, "If you claim this is baseless, I will submit testimony from classmates."
Although the individual did not directly mention the actress's real name in the exposé post, Cha Ye-ryeon was identified as the person involved based on the circumstances described in the post. As the controversy spread, Cha Ye-ryeon's agency, HB Entertainment, denied the allegations, stating, "Upon verification, this is baseless."
However, additional claims from netizens identifying themselves as classmates continued online afterward. Some claimed that Cha Ye-ryeon belonged to a so-called "yulin" (school bully) group during her school days and demanded that she acknowledge her past behavior and apologize to the victims.
On the other hand, voices defending Cha Ye-ryeon also emerged. One netizen who attended the same middle school stated, "Cha Ye-ryeon was not a kid who would hit or bully anyone," adding that they did not recall any instances of her taking money or items from others.
Amidst conflicting claims surrounding the school violence allegations against Cha Ye-ryeon, the controversy is spreading to her husband Joo Sang-wook even though no facts of wrongdoing have been confirmed yet. In particular, a past statement by Joo Sang-wook in an interview has come under renewed scrutiny, in which he said that if a school violence issue were to arise involving his daughter, "I think I would take extraordinary measures, whether my daughter is the perpetrator or the victim."
