Ecopro BM announced on the 6th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Samsung SDI to collaborate on the development of materials for all-solid-state batteries.
The two companies will jointly advance research and development in the field of all-solid-state batteries, a core technology for next-generation batteries. They plan to strengthen their collaborative framework from the early stages of development through quality evaluation and the establishment of the Yangsan system, aiming to enhance technical maturity and business competitiveness. Additionally, they intend to expand the scope of cooperation to cover all key materials, including cathode materials for all-solid-state batteries, electrolytes for cathodes, and electrolytes for separators.
Under the agreement, Samsung SDI will drive the development of all-solid-state battery cells and the advancement of Yangsan technology, while Ecopro BM will be responsible for developing core materials for all-solid-state batteries.
All-solid-state batteries are next-generation batteries that replace the liquid electrolyte, an essential component of conventional batteries, with a solid one. They are known as the 'dream battery' because they carry almost no risk of fire or explosion and offer longer usage per charge. They are considered a key technology for future industries such as electric vehicles and humanoid robots.
Ecopro BM has secured proprietary process technology in the field of sulfide-based solid electrolytes, a core material for all-solid-state batteries, and is currently operating a pilot plant with an annual capacity of 40 tons.
The company is strengthening its technological competitiveness based on powder control technology and quality management technology, which are considered key technologies in solid electrolyte development. Alongside this, it is simultaneously developing cathode materials suitable for solid electrolytes, leveraging its high-nickel cathode material technology.
Ecopro BM was selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's 'Super B Project' in August, recognizing its research and development achievements.
Kong Bo-hyun, Senior Executive Vice President in charge of Research and Development at Ecopro BM, stated at the time regarding solid electrolyte development, "We are currently reviewing mass production with major customers, and we expect the earliest mass production timeline to be 2027." He emphasized, "We have completed the design of the mass production line and are preparing to commence construction immediately in response to customer demand."
