The foreign investor ownership ratio in Samsung Electronics has fallen to its lowest level since the 2008 global financial crisis (subprime mortgage crisis).
According to the Korea Exchange on the 11th, the foreign ownership ratio for Samsung Electronics stood at 46.37% as of the 7th. The latest recorded figure is 46.38%, logged on the 8th.
This is the lowest level since January 11, 2008 (46.44%), when domestic and global stock markets plunged simultaneously due to the aftermath of the global financial crisis.
Samsung Electronics' foreign ownership ratio peaked at a year-to-date high of 52.40% on January 6 this year, before falling below the 50th% mark following the outbreak of the U.S.-Iran war.
Based on trading performance, foreigners have net sold 85.5017 trillion won worth of Samsung Electronics shares year-to-date. Retail investors net bought 45.0802 trillion won, other corporate entities net bought 29.8981 trillion won, and institutional investors net bought 10.2779 trillion won, respectively.
SK Hynix is also seeing accelerated foreign selling pressure this month. On the 8th, the foreign ownership ratio hit a year-to-date low of 49.59%. The year-to-date net selling amount by foreigners stands at 86.1400 trillion won.
Lee Jae-won, a research analyst at Yuanta Securities, stated in a report on the 8th, "Despite a solid industry environment and profit outlook, the foreign ownership ratios for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have recently declined again," adding that "the gap between fundamentals and supply-demand dynamics has widened."
He further noted, "The recent exodus of foreigners from semiconductor stocks is driven more by the increased discount rate on the Korean stock market in a high-interest-rate and high-oil-price environment, along with weakened foreign risk appetite, rather than an industry slowdown."
The analyst stated, "Given that damage to the industry environment is limited, it is necessary to pay attention to the possibility of supply-demand normalization after confirming interest rate normalization and Samsung Electronics' performance."
