Kakao is establishing a new entity, 'KakaoAI,' through a corporate spin-off, and its board of directors will include former Ministry of Science and ICT Minister Im Hye-sook, former National Tax Service Commissioner Kim Dae-ji, and former KT CTO Oh Seung-pil.
According to the split plan disclosed by Kakao on the 25th, the KakaoAI board is scheduled to consist of seven members in total: two internal directors, one Gi Ta-bi (SVP) director, and four external directors.
Among the internal directors are Jeong Shin-a, designated as CEO of KakaoAI, and Shin Jong-hwan, Kakao’s CFO (Chief Financial Officer).
Shin Jung-hwan, a venture partner at alToss Ventures who previously served as Kakao’s CTO, is set to be appointed as the Gi Ta-bi (SVP) director.
The four external directors are Im Jeon (Minister), former National Tax Service Commissioner Kim, former KT CTO Oh, and Professor Kim Young-jun of Korea University’s Technology Management Program Moon Dae-hak-won (Prof.).
Im Jeon (Minister) worked at Bell Labs and Cisco Systems in the United States before serving as a professor at Ewha Womans University's Department of Electronics Engineering. She served as Minister of Science and ICT from 2021 to 2022.
Kim Jeon (Commissioner) served as Commissioner of the Busan Local National Tax Service and Deputy Commissioner of the National Tax Service before serving as the 24th Commissioner of the National Tax Service from 2022 to 2022. He currently serves as an advisor at BnH Tax Firm.
Former CTO Oh worked at NASA (U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration), Microsoft, and Yahoo before leading digital divisions at Hyundai Card and Hyundai Commercial. He joined KT in 2023 to head the Technology Innovation Division, overseeing AI, information technology, and research and development, before stepping down in March this year.
Kim Jeon (Commissioner), former CTO Oh, and Professor Kim are also set to serve as members of KakaoAI’s Audit Committee.
