Actor Kang Shin-il (65) revealed the story of returning to a filming set just two weeks after undergoing liver cancer surgery.
On the episode aired on the 20th, SBS’s ‘Same Bed Different Dreams Season 2 – You Are My Destiny’ featured Kang Shin-il and his wife Oh Soo-mi, who have been married for 37 years, as they recalled their past struggles with liver cancer.
On the broadcast, Kang Shin-il revealed that he was diagnosed with liver cancer five years after entering the film industry following a long career in theater. He noted that it was a busy period when his activities increased due to the movie ‘Public Enemy.’ At the time, he was handling his schedule alone, without an agency or manager.
His wife Oh Soo-mi revealed about the situation at the time, saying, “Abnormal values were found in a blood test, and I was advised to get a CT scan, but I postponed the examination due to a scheduled performance.” She explained that as an actor whose career was starting to take off, she could not stop her activities.

Kang Shin-il underwent liver cancer surgery one month later. He returned to a drama filming set just two weeks after the surgery. He revealed that he filmed SBS’s drama ‘Golden Bride’ while wearing an abdominal binder, surprising everyone.
The reason he pushed himself to continue working was his sense of responsibility. At the time, he was 47 years old and the head of a family raising three children.
Kang Shin-il said, “I carried the economic burden of debts that had accumulated over a long period after my marriage,” adding, “Driven by the desire to resolve my debts as soon as possible, I filmed movies frantically for five to six years and did not let go of the theater stage even amidst a busy schedule.”
After her husband was diagnosed with liver cancer, his wife Oh Soo-mi also received a shock. At the time, their youngest daughter was in the first grade of elementary school. Before the surgery, Kang Shin-il reassured his wife by saying, “I will definitely have a successful surgery and get up healthy. I have a lot to do.”
Regarding the reaction of their youngest daughter upon hearing the news about her father, Oh Soo-mi said, “When I told our three daughters about Dad’s surgery, only the youngest cried. She asked, ‘Then what are we going to eat?’” eliciting laughter.
