Police have launched an investigation after discovering signs that a child who died in a church in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, was subjected to child abuse.
According to NEWS1 on the 8th, the National Police Agency in South Chungcheong Province is investigating three adults who lived with the deceased A (11) at the church where he resided, considering the possibility of applying charges for death by child abuse.
Fire authorities received a report around 8:49 p.m. on the 5th that A was ill at a church in Seobuk-gu, Cheonan City, and dispatched personnel to the scene. It is understood that A was suffering from a high fever and had reduced consciousness. The ambulance crew could not find a hospital in the Cheonan area to transport A to and instead transferred him to SejongChungnam National University Hospital, located one hour away, but he passed away early on the 6th.
Medical personnel discovered signs of suspected abuse on A's body and reported it to the police. It is reported that A had recently been staying in a living facility within the church. A's family is understood to have visited the church intermittently.
Police have secured witness statements indicating that A was found tied to a bed and are intensively examining whether abuse occurred. To determine the exact cause of death, an autopsy has been requested from the National Forensic Service. It is reported that the forensic service delivered an initial verbal opinion stating that no abnormalities such as fractures were found.
