Ryu I-seo, wife of Shinhwa member Jun Jin, has shared her experience of being secretly filmed while working as a flight attendant.
On Thursday, Seong Hae-eun, formerly a Korean Air flight attendant, appeared on the YouTube channel "My Love Ryu I-seo" for the TVING dating variety program "Transfer Love 2."
Ryu, formerly an Asiana Airlines flight attendant, and Seong discussed the hardships they faced while working as flight attendants.
When Seong Hae-eun mentioned physical contact and illegal filming as hardships faced by flight attendants, Ryu I-seo recalled an incident she experienced on board in the past.
Ryu I-seo said, "I felt something was strange while providing service. When I looked, a man was lying down doing something," demonstrating the passenger's posture at the time.
She continued, "I told my manager that something seemed strange and that it felt like someone was taking a picture," explaining, "Our uniforms were skirts, so it seemed like they were filming near our legs."
Upon hearing Ryu I-seo's account, the cabin supervisor checked the passenger's restroom usage records and discovered the photographed image, which was then deleted. Ryu I-seo revealed, "I became sensitive about photos from that moment on."
Seong Hae-eun also stated she had a similar experience. She mentioned commuting by subway from Seongnam to Incheon during her time as a flight attendant and said, "It seemed fascinating to see flight attendants, so there were people secretly filming me on the subway." Ryu I-seo agreed, saying, "Such incidents happen frequently in places like subways."
The two also discussed the strict hierarchical culture within past flight attendant organizations.
Seong said, "They say it has faded quite a bit in our time, but back then, you even had to make morning calls and wash seniors' stockings."
Ryu recalled personally making morning calls for senior flight attendants during her tenure. She recalled, "After stating my affiliation and name, I would say, 'Have you woken up?' When Jun Jin asked what would happen if she didn't make a morning call, Ryu replied, 'It would be a big problem.' She added that this culture gradually disappeared afterward."
Seong said flight attendants were expected to address senior colleagues as "eonni" (a term used for older female colleagues) regardless of age, and that there was a culture of never walking ahead of senior colleagues. Ryu also recalled that the youngest crew member would press the elevator button and wait for all the senior colleagues to board first, before getting on last herself.
The two said that when dining with seniors, there was a strong atmosphere of accompanying them, so one would feel awkward if not present at the table.
