KB Kookmin Bank announced on the 2nd that the personal credit information of 119 customers had been leaked due to an external breach.
The system from which the personal credit information was leaked was confirmed to be a mobile business support system for employees, entirely unrelated to customer financial transactions such as internet banking and mobile banking. The leaked items vary by customer but include customer names, phone numbers, addresses, and encrypted resident registration numbers.
KB Kookmin Bank explained that immediately after recognizing the possibility of information leakage through abnormal external access on the night of the 30th of last month, it fundamentally blocked the relevant server and access paths to prevent subsequent damages.
The affected customers were individually informed about the fact of the information leak and methods for preventing secondary damage. In addition to KB Kookmin Bank's main call center, a dedicated counseling center is also being operated to respond promptly to damage reports and other inquiries.
KB Kookmin Bank plans to provide full compensation in the event that customer damages occur due to this information leak.
A KB Kookmin Bank official stated, "We are taking this situation very seriously. We have activated a company-wide emergency response system, including thoroughly reviewing the entire related process from scratch to prevent additional damage and recurrence."
The banking sector is on high alert due to consecutive information leakage incidents. Previously, Shinhan Bank also experienced a hacking incident on the 30th of last month, resulting in the leakage of customer information for approximately 25,000 people. In Shinhan Bank's case as well, hackers exploited security vulnerabilities in a simple inquiry service for loan recruiters, which was unrelated to internet banking and mobile banking, leading to the information leak.
