Six Samsung Group companies, including Samsung Electronics, are set to invest in a U.S. AI infrastructure company. This move aims to fully launch an offensive on the global platform market in the AI era by combining the competitiveness of affiliated companies, rather than fighting individual battles.
The six companies—Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance—announced on the 29th that they have decided to invest a total of $1 billion in 'Helix Digital Infrastructure' (hereinafter Helix), an AI infrastructure company established by U.S. global investment firm KKR. Samsung Electronics will contribute $500 million, while the remaining five companies will contribute $500 million.
Helix, which announced its launch last June, is a company that provides integrated AI-related infrastructure and aims to secure initial investments of at least $10 billion or more.
Through this investment, Samsung affiliates will participate as founding investors in Helix alongside semiconductor companies, investment firms, and power companies leading the global AI infrastructure ecosystem, including KKR, NVIDIA, U.S. power company Vistra, and the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA).
Considering Samsung Electronics' astronomical operating profit recently, the investment amount itself is not large, but it serves as a strategic move to gain leadership in related markets that are expected to expand continuously in the future. For instance, the Samsung Electronics DS (semiconductor) division will supply cutting-edge semiconductors, while the DX (finished products) division can provide data center cooling products and solutions, ranging from air-cooling product lines to liquid cooling distribution units (CDUs), through Flex Group, a specialized data center HVAC subsidiary acquired in 2025.
Additionally, the construction division of Samsung C&T will actively pursue large-scale infrastructure projects as an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor in the fields of data center construction and power generation. Samsung SDS will carry out data center design, construction, and operation businesses as an IT (information technology) service provider.
This is essentially the first time that Samsung has conducted large-scale joint investments with its affiliates in the AI industry sector. The only previous instance was the investment by Samsung Electronics and Samsung C&T last October in Grail, a health company possessing early cancer diagnosis technology.
The industry views this as an attempt for Samsung to position itself not just as a semiconductor manufacturer, but as a partner across the entire infrastructure landscape, as the AI ecosystem takes shape. A Samsung official emphasized, "This will serve as an opportunity to expand the competitiveness of components held by our affiliates into influence at the system and infrastructure level," adding, "Through this, we will broaden our standing from being merely a component supplier in the AI ecosystem to becoming an entity directly participating in building the infrastructure ecosystem."
