The Hangul Computer Foundation will hold its first official event, a multicultural family harmony camp.
On the 28th, the Hangul Computer Foundation and the nonprofit organization Our Culture Guardians announced that they will jointly host "Multicultural Harmony Camp: Joy of Being Together" at Cheongrium in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province on the 4th–5.
Families from multicultural households affiliated with seven institutional investors in the Seoul metropolitan area will participate. The participating centers include Gangdong-gu, Gapyeong-gun, Guri-si, Anyang-si, Seongnam-si family centers, Namyangju regional children's center, and Seoul single-parent family center. Participants come from 12 countries including China, Vietnam, Japan, the Philippines, Mongolia, Peru, and Australia. Rotary International District 3640 and Umunji Volunteer Corps will also contribute through volunteer work. The total number of participants is approximately 400.
During the opening ceremony on the first day of the camp, a total of 30 million won in scholarships will be awarded to 30 multicultural youth. The scholarships were jointly provided by the Hangul Computer Foundation, Rotary International District 3640, and Umunji. A memorandum of understanding between Umunji and Gapyeong County Family Center will also be signed. This aims to establish a sustainable cooperation system for multicultural families in the region.
During the event period, various cultural exchange programs will take place. Starting with an opening performance by the Arumduri Multicultural Choir, there will be a special lecture on K-content culture by Professor Shim Yong-hwan of the History Research Institute. Family group games hosted by popular comedians Kim Jun-ho, Kim Dae-hee, and Hong In-gyu will also be arranged.
On the grassy field, world food booths offering representative dishes from five countries including China and Vietnam, as well as traditional play experience zones, will operate. In the evening, a "Night of Harmony" featuring performances and campfires will be held.
On the second day, participants' talent show and poetry exhibition award ceremony will take place. All participants will complete a large character symbolizing harmony together, concluding the two-day, one-night schedule.
This camp is the first official event hosted by the recently established Hangul Computer Foundation. Hancom plans to continue its philosophy of protecting Hangul through technology over the past 30-plus years into foundation activities and expand the value of Hangul into the areas of culture and sharing.
Hancom has continued donation and sponsorship activities in various fields such as traditional culture, education, and social welfare. It has supported institutional investors related to Hangul, including Sejong Academy, and promoted the dissemination and expansion of Hangul by providing Hancom Office free of charge.
The Hangul Computer Foundation plans to focus its future activities on Hangul/Korean language education and support for culturally marginalized groups. It intends to promote initiatives such as creating Hangul play culture linked with K-content, supporting global Hangul education infrastructure, and expanding educational opportunities and welfare improvement programs for multicultural families, youth, and culturally marginalized groups.
A representative of the Hangul Computer Foundation said, "It is very meaningful to hold our foundation's first official event as a gathering where families with different languages and cultures become one through the Korean language." He added, "Based on the philosophy of protecting Hangul through technology over the past 30-plus years, we will continue warm sharing so that more people, including multicultural families, can communicate without language barriers and enjoy culture."
Yoon Jeong, chairperson of the Umunji Volunteer Committee, said, "The sight of families from different backgrounds gathering in one place and smiling with the same light is truly a beautiful scene that our society must preserve." He expressed his hope that "all participating families will have a warm 2 Days & 1 Night where they feel the value of diversity."
