SK Telecom announced on the 3rd that it has been selected as a "2027 LEAD (Lead) Company" by the Korea Association of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). The company was recognized for sharing ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) management cases utilizing AI (Artificial Intelligence) and contributing to the expansion of sustainable management.
The UNGC is a corporate sustainability dialogue body launched by the United Nations in 2000. It supports corporate sustainability in areas such as human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. The Korea Association of the UNGC selects approximately 10 companies and institutional investors from among its roughly 360 member companies each year as lead companies for their contributions to the development of the ESG ecosystem.
SK Telecom has served as co-chair of the Environment Working Group of the Korea Association of the UNGC, sharing its experience in responding to ESG issues and know-how in building management systems. In particular, it introduced cases of applying AI to ESG operations to support member companies' utilization of AI.
On the same day, SK Telecom will also introduce cases of energy efficiency improvement using AI and promoting decarbonization of data centers at the "2026 Korea Leaders Summit" held at the Grand Hyatt Seoul in Seoul.
Eom Jong-hwan, Director of Sustainable Management at SK Telecom, will deliver a presentation on the theme of "Beyond the Carbon Dilemma of AI." SK Telecom is advancing environmental management in two directions: "AI for Decarbonization" and "Decarbonization for AI." The company is applying AI-based power-saving technology to its communication network and also working to improve the operational efficiency of data centers.
Director Eom stated, "Energy transition and decarbonization require cooperation with various stakeholders, including government and financial institutions, as well as companies," adding, "We will share experiences and know-how with UNGC member companies and strengthen the foundation for sustainable growth by linking AI technological innovation with environmental management."
