The "Autonomous Growth AI Humanoid Global TOP Strategy Research Group," led by the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM), and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) will establish Korea's first dedicated data production facility for bipedal humanoid robots.

On Tuesday, the KIMM said that it expects to secure a wide range of data, from limb movements to full-body tasks, by building an "AI Humanoid Data Factory" within its main campus.

The data factory is currently operating 12 humanoid robots. When humans remotely operate the robots to perform various tasks, the movement and task information generated during this process are recorded and utilized for AI training. Plans are in place to gradually expand both the number of robots and the scope of tasks targeted for data collection.

The secured data will be used to train AI so that robots can understand human instructions and their surrounding environment and perform tasks autonomously. The trained AI is then applied to actual robots to verify performance, and newly acquired data from this process is fed back into the training cycle.

Ryu Seok-hyun, director of the KIMM, said, "Through industry-academia-research collaboration, we will accelerate the development of the domestic humanoid robot 'KAIROS' and gradually open the data factory to the public starting at the end of 2027, contributing to strengthening the competitiveness of Korea's physical AI industry."

The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to link the "K-Moonshot" project with this mission to consolidate domestic research capabilities.
