Related legal and regulatory amendments will be pushed forward to expand the military application of hydrogen energy, using "Smart Energy Plus (SMART ENERGY PLUS · SEP) 2026" as a catalyst.
The Army will hold its "3rd Army Energy Policy Forum" in conjunction with "SEP 2026" on the 28th at Hall B of COEX in Seoul Samsung-dong, to discuss directions for developing next-generation energy policies in response to changes in future battlefield environments. The event aims to explore military utilization options for diverse energy sources such as solar, hydrogen, and nuclear power, with the goal of strengthening military energy security and ensuring stable war-sustaining capabilities.
The legislative amendments will be centered on the National Assembly offices of members belonging to the National Assembly Hydrogen Economy Forum. Lee Jong-bae, a People Power Party lawmaker and co-chair of the National Assembly Hydrogen Economy Forum, and Heo Seong-mu, a Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker serving on the Committee for Industry, Trade, Resources and SMEs who is handling the relevant bill, will each push forward as lead sponsors.
With participation from lawmakers of both ruling and opposition parties, the effort focuses on establishing an institutional foundation necessary for utilizing hydrogen energy, taking into account the military's unique operational environment. Plans include streamlining related laws and regulations to enable the effective operation of mobile hydrogen refueling facilities essential to the military, and formulating institutional improvement measures that enhance military applicability while ensuring safety.
An Army official said, "If the legislative amendments are advanced, we expect a legal and institutional foundation will be established for the military to stably introduce and utilize hydrogen energy." The official added, "Furthermore, this will serve as an important turning point that can expand the scope of application to various military fields, including hydrogen-based power generation systems and hydrogen-powered mobile equipment."
Meanwhile, "SEP 2026" will be held from the 28th to the 30th at Hall B of COEX. It is co-hosted by MoneyToday and COEX, and organized by the National Assembly Hydrogen Economy Forum. The Army, along with LG Group, HD Hyundai Electric, Doosan Enerbility, Hyundai Rotem, Unison, the Army, Seoul City, and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, among others, will set up booths to showcase energy security strategies for the AI era. Visitors can also review electric and hydrogen vehicle strategies from Hyundai Motor, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, and Polestar.
